TERMS AND CONDITIONS

OVERALL JUDGING CRITERIA

Special emphasis will be placed on the entertainment and marketing value during judging. This in no way takes away from the technical aspect of the performances. Judges are looking for that special charisma and stage presence that top entertainers have... and who is marketable? Keep in mind as important as it is to have your performance technically correct, it is even more important to keep it entertaining. Contestant may only enter a style in a category once. “Open” Categories may be used for second performance of the same style. However, we do not recommend singing the same song more than once.

Music Rules

All music must be USB Drive are required to ensure the quality of the competitions and final show. Each performance must be on a separate USB Drive. Each USB Drive must have a label with contestants (or group’s) name, event, style, and age division. Example: John Doe, Dance, Jazz and 16-17 years. Please bring a back up drives for each performance. Completed music clearance forms are required. Original music is always encouraged for all styles, categories and competitions in which music is used. All background music should be formatted in MP3 format ONLY. You must PURCHASE your music from quality outlets. Pirated online music has poor sound quality with fluctuations in volumes when played on professional sound systems. Every time music is cut and re-recorded it loses quality. Record all music from the master and not from copies. If given the option for input/output volumes when recording, record volumes in the middle of the range given. Check purchased music on a computer player and confirm it has been recorded in MP3 format. If when performing music, you must hear the first note to start your performance, let the room coordinator know this when you are in line-up so the volume on the sound system can be raised. Please keep in mind Round I and Round II competition are in audition format. There is only one minute and no sound checks. The judges understand the difference between a performance error and sound issues. No music will be used for the final show performance that is not a quality recording.

A separate vocal category is included: VOCAL SELF-ACCOMPANIMENT (piano, guitar, etc.) and includes all 14 styles. Contestants must provide amps for electrical instruments.

Time Limits

The time limit for all performances is sixty (60) seconds. All rounds and the finals are sixty (60) seconds. A 25% deduction will be taken for any performance going over the time limit. Time will begin when the music starts and will stop when the music stops. Remember, you may go under the time limit but not over!

Performance Prompting

Parents, family, friends, agents, hairdressers, dressers, teachers or make-up artist are not allowed behind the stage before or during competitions.

Dance Rules

Dance Floor: Interlocking black sections or facsimile approximately twenty (20) feet deep by thirty (30) feet wide.

*stages not designated for dance may be smaller.

Judging Categories: Stage Presence, Originality of Material, Technique, Style, and Entertainment Value are all considered during the scoring process.

Acrobatic & Gymnastic Moves: Acrobatic moves and tumbling passes are allowed in Acro/Gymnastic and Production numbers. Dance should be incorporated throughout the routine.

Lip Syncs and Vocalizations: Small isolated lip syncs and vocalizations are allowed in all categories. Total song lip syncs should go in Open, and dance with total song vocalizations in the form of singing should go in Song & Dance.

Ballet: a classical and character work performed in ballet shoes or pointe shoes showing ballet technique whether classical, neo-classical or contemporary.

Jazz: a routine where dancers execute free form movement and styling characteristic of jazz dance whether in jazz or character shoes of any kind, half-soles or bare feet.

Tap: a routine where dancers wear tap shoes and execute tap technique.

Clogging/Hoofer: Clogging- a routine where dancers wear clogging shoes and execute clogging technique including but not limited to rhythmic patterns and formations. Hoofer-Primarily tap technique and work showcasing a “Stomp/Da Funk” feel with heavy accent with more of a flat foot style.

Song & Dance: a routine where contestant(s) sing and dance, with at least 50% being dance.

Acro/Gymnastic: a routine consisting of controlled acrobatic and/or gymnastic movements involving balance and flexibility. Routine must include choreography, dance technique and fluid movement. (Preference – no mats.)

Lyrical: a routine where dancers interpret the lyrics or mood (intent) of a song (with or without words). This form includes the use of legwork, balance, and facial and body emotion.

Ethnic/Folkloric: a routine consisting of dance styles of a particular ethnic group.

Hip Hop/Funk: a routine where the majority of the content is “street wise” jazz or contemporary jazz considered as hip-hop or funk.

Open: a routine combining any forms of dance styles or a routine that does not fit any category listed. Or you want to do the same style twice!

Musical Theater/Character: a routine interpreting a song from a “Broadway” or movie musical, or a routine portraying a character from a play, movie, television show or a stereotype (i.e. doctor, policeman, etc.) through any style of dance.

Ballroom: a routine with partners in the following styles: Tango, Salsa, Freestyle, Swing, Waltz

Production Line/Crew: Minimum of ten (10) participants but all of them do not have to be on the floor at the same time. Dancers of all ages and all styles of dance may be used in the production. Singing, props and costume changes are welcome but must be handled by group and accomplished in the 60 seconds.

Contemporary: The exploration of the total movement potential of the body. It differs from commercial or competitive dance in that it is not bound by set standards, as well as defined styles such as ballet and jazz dance Instead; it seeks to express a personalized vision, often through experimentation and collaboration for the development of new, more individualized approaches to the moving body and choreographic possibilities

Vocal Rules (Vocal Solos and Vocal Groups)

Microphones: Lavaliere, headsets, corded and cordless handheld microphones will be available. Please keep in mind not all types of microphones may be available. Every effort will be made to accommodate your needs. However, keep in mind a professional performer can make needed adjustments. Vocal Self-Accompaniment (piano, guitar, etc.) includes all 14 vocal styles. Only in Vocal Self-Accompaniment may an instrument be used. In vocal, all music must be pre-recorded on a USB Drive. A pianist (or other) accompanying a vocalist does NOT qualify as “vocal self-accompaniment”.

*The pianist (or other) accompanying a vocalist must be on a CD. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Judging Categories: appropriate song and lyrics for age and talent, correct vocal range, pitch and tone quality, diction, enunciation and elocution, voice projection, strong self-image, body movements, stage presence, handling of microphone, breath control and over all entertainment value will all be judged. Original music is always encouraged for all styles when possible.

Modeling Rules (SOLO ONLY. No group modeling.)

Stage Size: The stage is shaped like a “T”. The runway from back of stage will be approximately 28 feet long. This will be made of interlocking wooden sections or facsimile placed on the floor or may be raised. You will enter at the top of the runway section of the T then work the runway section. Judges prefer this is done in a fast upbeat manner. Enter at the top go to the bottom then back up to the top of the T then off the same way you came on.

Categories: Females 16 and up may compete in three divisions: Petite (height under 5 foot 6 inches), Plus (hip size 36 and up) and Runway (approximate height 5 feet 8 inches). Males may compete in two divisions: Commercial (Height Under 6 feet), Runway (Height 6 feet and over). Children (15 years and under) only age will be used to divide divisions. Senior-Every Day Model Segment is selected from Petite, Plus and Commercial Male models for Finale. All models, except children age 15 and under, will be divided by age, height and size. Children can be divided by age ONLY and may only compete in general divisions (formal, casual, swimwear, photo and spokes model. For the finale the divisions will be Children 10 and under and Junior 11-15. Children and Junior ages will only model formalwear in the finale. Both 10 and under and 11-15 will still need to compete in casual and formal to make the score to compete in the finale.

Music: Appropriate music will be provided for the style of modeling. Swimwear and Casual Runway will be upbeat while Formal will be slower music.

Modeling Pattern: Contestants will enter from stage right or left, go to the top of the runway, continue down the runway and then to stage left to pose then to stage right to pose. This is only a suggestion. Please keep your modeling pace with the music. You may work the runway in your own style. Please do NOT use props of any kind. During the spokes model event, the contestant will go to the end of the stage and do a maximum of a 60 second commercial, announcement or monologue. The contestant must carry any props on and off stage with NO assistance. Do not bring props on from the audience. All modeling contestants moving to the final showcase competition will be expected to walk runway style.

Runway Casual: Clothes should be “DRESSY” sportswear casual (jacket and pants). No costumes!

Swimwear: One or two-piece swimwear may be worn. No thongs are to be worn. Swimsuit should cover buttocks. Covers are not recommended for seniors. However, covers are recommended for juniors. Juniors should present a beachwear image.

Formal: Females: Formal wear should be modest. Remember less is not better! Men: Tuxedos or black suit.

Model finalists (female and male) will be determined from points in Formalwear (junior and senior), swimwear (seniors) and runway casual (juniors). Models must enter BOTH styles to qualify for Finals. During finals, models may be re-dressed to suit production. Models not acting professionally and following directives during rehearsals or fittings will be disqualified from finals. All models should bring formal and swimwear just in case they are selected for semi-finals. Any model may be selected by producers for semi-finals regardless of entries.

Photo model: When you line up for photo model you must have at least one but not more than three photos (black and white or color; no frames or mats accepted). All photographs must have a typed label with your first and last name, age group, and photo release signature from the photographer (see Photographer’s Release on bottom of page 15). During photo modeling, you will be asked to stand on the runway… no modeling! Staff has the right to disqualify provocative photos lacking in good taste. DO NOT SEND PHOTOS WITH REGISTRATION!

Acting Rules (solo or group, however groups will not continue to finals)

All acting performances and routines must be in good taste and suitable for families. Routines lacking good taste may be disqualified. All props used during acting must be carried on and off stage by contestant. Fake blood, confetti, water, or other objects should not be left behind on stage, or thrown into audience. Contestants leaving behind anything on the stage will be disqualified. All acting contestants are encouraged to enter comical.

Comical: may be Stand up or Variety (comedy routine integrated with magic, puppets, etc.) Note: A comedian can also enter “Acting – Comical” as another potential category for comedy competition.

*All Junior actors should enter Comical for semi-final round. Seniors may be given a scene to reenact during Finals.

Open: may be another category for comedy competition or any style.

Television: Category for those wanting to work on film. This is a close up live camera shot. Use this competition to show the value of expression. Every actor should enter this style. Act may be comical or dramatic. This is performed live and does NOT use prerecorded materials.

Instrumentalist Rules

Equipment- You must provide all equipment you need including amps and cords. We will provide mics and sound system to mic non-electric instruments

Instrumentalist may enter solo or group.
(*Note: Original music is always encouraged for all styles when possible.)

Description of Variety

Aerial Acts Silk/Rope- These acts may be done using vertical rope, fabric hangs, silk, tissue, Spanish web and or hammock. Anything hanging with rope or fabric that are 4” or more off the ground. Max rig height 18 feet. No massive orbiting acts or flying silks. Aerial is open to solo artist only. NO GROUP ACTS ALLOWED.

Ground Acts: Any act such as hand balancing: role bola, diablo, acrobatic, canes, stilts, globe walkers, batons, baton twirling, magic, unicycling, foot archers, poi acts, and manipulation acts: juggling, ladder, Chinese pole with self-standing pole. Ground Acts are open to Solo and Groups.

Contortion: All contortion acts are welcome. Elite acts must be able to do chin stands and hold handstands for this category. Contortion is open to solo and groups.

Fire Acts: Any act where fire is used during a Ground Act. This category may be filmed for presentation during the finale. Fire acts may be solo or group.

SPORTSMANSHIP

This is an international event with people traveling from all corners of the world. It is important to always use good sportsmanship. Instructors, teachers, and parents should set the example. Everyone will be focused on the “gold medal” in each age division and every category and style. However, all contestants have the opportunity to be seen. It is not unusual for someone who did not place in the competition to get a professional contract. Any show of bad sportsmanship may cost you this valuable opportunity!

PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEOGRAPHY

Professional photographers are scheduled for each event. Specially priced packages are available for the contestants to purchase all of their performance photos on CD (ask your Director for more information). This package also includes a “Camera Pass” that allows an individual to take additional performance photos that the official photographers might not capture. This pass covers non-professional equipment, such as personal cameras, video cameras, and camera phones. The official event photographers, as well as pre-authorized media, will be provided a Camera Pass tag. Anyone without this tag on their camera in the competition rooms or during Opening, Awards, or Final Ceremonies will be asked to leave and their Events Badge will be taken. One will then be required to purchase another badge at $200.00 for the violation. Please do not embarrass yourself or others by attempting to use a camera without a camera tag. These visible tags will make enforcement easier. Only Official WCOPA photographers are allowed in seminars and go-sees. No flash cameras of any type will be allowed at “Finals” (cameras may be used without a flash if you have purchased a camera pass). A photography session will take place after the event. Winners will be escorted to a press conference immediately after the event at the VIP Party.

UNAUTHORIZED MATERIALS

Distribution of unauthorized material such as pamphlets, brochures, magazines etc. at the site of the World Championships of Performing Arts is prohibited.

ORGANIZATION

This event is run according to “industry standards” and similar to auditions. If problems or challenges occur, “ADAPT”! Not everything will be perfect! It is the responsibility of the entrant to stop the performance if there is something not right (for example, the music is not right contestant may bow head for restart only if it is technical). All contestants (or representatives) must be at the Orientation Meeting on July 24, 2020 to get awards on August 1, 2020.

SOUND BOARD (AUDIO) & PERSONNEL

Scouts, Directors, Contestants, Parents, Coaches, everyone – STAY AWAY FROM THE SOUND BOARD AND PERSONNEL. If you have questions or challenges, check with the Contestant Coordinators which are located at the side of each performance stage.

DISQUALIFICATION

The World Championships of the Performing Arts and the staff associated with any and all competitions and activities reserve the right to disqualify any contestant based on an infraction of the rules and unsportsmanlike behavior. Penalties will be enforced for time infractions. Make sure you understand the time limits and rules associated with the events you are entering. If you have any questions concerning these rules, contact your scout or National Director. If your scout or National Director cannot answer your question, they will contact the producers and/or the corporate office for clarification. It is important that your questions and concerns are directed through your National Director. National Director should contact Gwen Wilson for clarification.

Contestants and attendees are expected to follow written instructions as well as verbal instruction. Staff in each competition room has the right to disqualify acts for profanity, inappropriate dress, or not following verbal instruction. In addition any contestant leaving trash in a competition room will be disqualified. Parents, attendees and contestants must put trash in the containers provided in the competition rooms and in general meeting areas. Rooms will be closed to bringing in food and beverages if attendees are not respectful and put trash in the containers provided.

Hotel rooms will be inspected on the day prior to check out. Any damage to the hotel rooms will be charged to those assigned to the room. Your director will be responsible for collecting damages. All awards will be withdrawn if damages are not collected.

Please be respectful of others and respectful of the hotel property. The actions of a few cost everyone. Be mindful you represent your family, country and those who will follow in your steps in the future.
